Section 1

Topics:

1. Movements for Political and Social reform – 1870-1914
2. The Pursuit of Sovereignty and the Impact of Partition – 1912-1949

History of Europe and the Wider World, 1815-1992

Topics:

1. Nation States and International Tensions, 1871 – 1920
2. Dictatorship and Democracy, 1920-1945

On the written paper questions related to these topics are allocated 60% of the overall marks for the Leaving Cert..

Section 2

Research Studies - Special Study

Based on choice from the above topics. Allocated 20% of the mark. These research projects will be normally completed in 6th year around the end of April.

Section 3

Documents

There will be an emphasis on ‘Documents Based Study’ - for which 20% of marks will be allocated.


Note:

There is no career which specifically requires History buy a background in History is almost essential to an understanding of involvement in all aspects of public life. It would be very desirable for studies in Journalism, Law, and Archaeology.

Please see enclosed circular/letter from the DES in relation to changes in the structure of the examination process for History commencing in September 2004. You will see that it now includes a research project submitted prior to the written examination. This receives 20% of the overall mark. Your History teacher will discuss this with you further details of changes in course and examination structure.
